Meet the candidate

Omoyele Sowore

Omoyele Sowore is a Nigerian journalist, human rights activist and politician from Kiribo in Ese-Odo Local Government Area of Ondo State. Born on 16 February 1971, he is the founder and publisher of Sahara Reporters, an online news platform established in 2006.

He studied Geography and Planning at the University of Lagos and earned a Master’s degree in Public Administration from Columbia University in the United States. As President of the University of Lagos Students’ Union between 1992 and 1994, he participated in campaigns against military rule and advocated students’ rights.

Sowore founded the African Action Congress in 2018 and contested the presidential elections in 2019 and 2023 under its platform. His public career centres on democratic reform, human rights and opposition to corruption. He is listed as the AAC presidential candidate for 2027, alongside Haruna Garba Magashi.

Haruna Garba Magashi

Haruna Garba Magashi is a Nigerian lawyer, human rights advocate and politician from Kano State. He was raised in Kano’s Magashi Ward, from which he derives his surname. He was called to the Nigerian Bar in 2005 and has remained in active legal practice.

Magashi is the Principal Partner of Hujjah Chambers, with offices in Kano and Abuja. His legal work includes defending vulnerable people, providing free legal representation and supporting access to justice for people who cannot afford legal services. He has also provided legal support to organisations working with persons with disabilities.

He joined the African Action Congress in 2021 and served as Sowore’s running mate in the 2023 presidential election. For 2027, he returns as the party’s vice-presidential candidate, bringing a background in legal practice and human rights advocacy to the ticket. His stated political priorities include justice, accountable leadership and the protection of ordinary Nigerians.
